Acne is a disease of skin inflammation that occurs due to over activity of the oil glands usually developing in the face, at the back, shoulders and the chest causing spots or makes the skin oily which can be very painful if touched .It can be mild (pimples), moderate (papules), severe (cysts and nodules), pustule which contains pus, blackheads or whiteheads.

☑ Blackheads-small bumps that is usually black or yellow in color on the skin due to production of a pigment by the inner lining of the hair follicle.

☑ Whiteheads-looks like the blackheads but they are much firmer and upon squeezing them it cannot empty.

☑ Papules-sore bumps that are small and appears to be red.

☑ Pustules-the same as papules but the centre has a white tip because of pus building in it.

☑ Nodules-they are large and hard lumps that develop on the skin surface and are very painful.

☑ Cysts-often severe as they are always large lumps that are full of pus and can cause permanent scars. Similar to boils.

Causes of acne

Acne usually affects teenagers who are undergoing puberty  as hormonal level changes but can sometimes affects adults but at a very lower rate.

✔ When androgenic hormones become more active then on combining with bacteria on your skin and fatty acids in the oil glands causes acne.

✔ Production of oil in large amounts in hair follicles by glands producing grease therefore changes skin activity becoming aggressive causing inflammation of the skin and development of pus.

✔ Hormone fluctuation during menstrual periods or pregnancy in women.

✔ Putting on some clothing such as helmets or hats.

✔ It can be genetic as it can be passed down from parent to child.

✔ Drugs-those that contain iodides or bromides or lithium often cause or worsen acne.

✔ Some acne may be caused by being exposed to a particular working environment especially when dealing with products such as cutting oils.

✔ Use of skin care products can clog skin pores hence causing acne. Always go through ingredients carefully before applying it on your skin. Choosing a product that has water as the first or second ingredient is most recommended if your skin poses a danger of developing acne.

-To prevent breakage which may escalate acne condition then always make sure when cleaning your face you do it gently. Using your hand or cotton is much recommended as opposed to materials that may cause the sores to rapture.

Acne can be very embarrassing and can lower your self-esteem. Depending on the severity of the acne the following drugs are meant for acne treatment :


Comprises vitamin A and includes Retin-A, Tazorac and Differein. Often used to treat whiteheads and blackheads. These often work by unclogging pores hence preventing or reducing acne. It causes skin irritation and increases sensitivity to the sun but they can be used during sunny seasons if proper sun protection is put into consideration.

Benzoyl peroxide

It includes Benoxyl, persagel, clearasi; and PanOxyl .Used in treating bacteria on skin surface that usually causes acne. It causes skin dryness or irritation.


Includes clindamycin and erythromycin which are applied on the skin, tetracycline which are taken orally in order to control bacteria on the surface and prevent skin inflammation. When combined with benzoyl peroxide then they become more effective. If you have severe acne then oral retinoid is the best to use. Isotretinoin side effects include drying of the skin, triglycerides and cholesterol elevation together with birth defects.

Oral contraceptives

Practicing birth control is much recommended for childbearing women usually before, during and after treatment with isotretinoin to prevent any birth defects. Some pills effectively treat acne but those with low estrogen often have a low effect on acne.

Cortisone injections

Often injected by a doctor in order to make cysts and large pimples flatten fast.


This blocks any androgen receptors and is most suitable for women with acne that has become resistant. Its side effects include menstrual irregularities, breast tenderness and increase in the level of potassium in the blood.


It is most suitable in treating severe, persistent and scarring acne. Side effects include drying of the lips and muscle aches. It is not safe for pregnant women as it may cause birth defects. Users may also be exposed to inflammatory bowel disease and depression though they are rare.

It can be used with photosynthesizing dyes as it is safe and effective.

Often undertaken by estheticians in removing blackheads and are found to be very helpful.

Hormone therapy

For those who show signs and symptoms of thinning hair, irregular periods or excess androgen then therapy will be very helpful in preventing acne development. Therapy includes anti-androgen, low dose estrogen or progesterone medications.

Surgical procedures are often available as it aids in elevating deeply, laser resurfacing that smoothens out any shallow scars and depression of the scars. They are very helpful in treating scars though they may not be completely eliminated.

-The thought of a dirty skin or poor hygiene being a cause of acne is false asreactions that causes acne often do occur under the skin.

-Perception of being infected by a person with acne is not true.

-Poor diet cannot cause acne .
